With incoming Colonia (N.J.) defensive lineman Antonio Alfano committing to Alabama, New Jersey's No. 2 recruit has come off the board. The 6-5, 275-pounder, is long, explosive and has big-play potential. But how will his skills manifest in Tuscaloosa within Bama's 3-4 defensive scheme? Below, NJ.com broke down Alfano's overall skill-set as well as the first game he played in 2017 for Rahway, after sitting out four games due to NJSIAA transfer rules. Find out what he brings to the Crimson Tide inside the lines.
Testing at The Opening
Alfano, as a defensive lineman, produced the second-highest cumulative score of anyone at the event -- numbers comparable to Rashan Gary's metrics in 2015. He measured 6-4, 275 and ran a 4.82 second 40, a 4.27-second shuttle, threw the power ball a sick 46 feet (best in camp) and performed a 36.6-inch vertical leap. The 40 time is impressive for a 280-pounder, but the shuttle time is even more elite. The almost 37-inch vertical leap is just ridiculous for a player that large and the power ball throw shows that despite being fast, Alfano also has elite strength.
For those wondering, as a junior, Gary ran a 4.74-second 40, 4.38-second shuttle, threw the power ball 36 feet and vertically leaped 32.1 inches at 6-4, 287 pounds.
2017 statistics
Alfano accumulated 67 tackles, nine for loss, five sacks, two batted passes, seven quarterback hurries, a blocked field goal and forced fumble in seven games in 2017.
