No U.S. team to root for this summer? Don't worry, we've got you covered on how to become a bandwagon fan of this country. USA TODAY Sports

Friday's World Cup slate got off to a thrilling start as Uruguay used a late goal to earn three points against a Mo Salah-less Egypt.

The second match of the day was also left late, as an own goal in stoppage time gave Iran a 1-0 win against Morocco, a result that completely changed the equation for Group B. In the late game, Spain and Portugal meet in an Iberian Peninsula showdown, each team looking to get on the front foot in their first match of the tournament.

Stick with us all day for all the goals and biggest moments!

Portugal vs. Spain

26' – Off the crossbar! A rocket from Isco hits the crossbar and bounces down on the goal line, inches away from giving Spain the lead.

24' – GOAL SPAIN! (1-1) Diego Costa brings down a long ball against two defenders, fights off Jose Fonte with a couple of cut-backs and gets himself some space to fire into the lower corner. What an effort.

22' – Portugal squanders a big chance on the counter-attack. Ronaldo lays the ball off to a wide open Goncalo Guedes at the top of the penalty area, but he tries to dribble too much and loses the ball.

18' – Yellow card for Spain's Sergio Busquets... Remember that a player gets suspended if he picks up a yellow card in two different games.

14' – With that goal, Ronaldo becomes the fourth player to score in four different World Cups, joining Miroslav Klose and Uwe Seeler of Germany and Brazilian legend Pele.

4'GOAL PORTUGAL! (1-0) Ronaldo steps up and converts the penalty, knocking it into the right corner while Spain goalkeeper David de Gea went the other way. Dream start for Portugal. Rona

3' – Penalty! Ronaldo drives into the box and he's brought down by Nacho. Referee deems there was enough contact for a spot kick.

PREGAME – Iran's win against Morocco puts enormous pressure on Portugal and Spain in their opening match. A loss could be crushing for either team and it will be interesting to see how that affects the gameplan. Will we see a more conservative approach?

Iran 1, Morocco 0

FULL TIME – Iran 1, Morocco 0. Late drama again as a Morocco own goal gives Iran the win and a crucial three points to start Group B play. The pressure is on for Spain and Portugal.

95' – GOAL IRAN! It's an own goal in the dying minutes of extra time as Morocco's Aziz Bouhaddouz accidentally heads it in with a diving header while trying to clear. Heartbreak for Morocco.

80' – Big save! Iran's Beiranvand dives to keep out a rocket from Hakim Ziyech.

76' – Morocco's Nordin Amrabat appeared to have suffered a head injury. He gets substituted as we enter the final 15 minutes.

68' – Iran makes the game's first substitution. Mehdi Taremi on for Masoud Shojaei out wide.

60' – Been a tight second half, with neither side getting a clear chance. The fans in Russia seem to have revived the vuvuzelas from the 2010 World Cup, which is either awesome or the worst thing ever.

HALFTIME (0-0) – It was a wide-open first half, and while Morocco dominated possession, each team had some good chances. Should be an exciting finish in St. Petersburg.

43' – Huge save! Iran gets a breakaway on the counter-attack, but Sardar Azmoun gets stopped in the 1-on-1 by Morocco goalkeeper Munir.

19' – Chaos in front of goal! Morocco takes three consecutive close-range shots in a scramble, the first two get blocked and the third needs a good save Alireza Beiranvand.

7' – Morocco really on the front foot in the opening minutes. Couple of decent chances and dominating out wide, particularly on the right with fullback Nordin Amrabat.

– PREGAME: At first glance it's easy to assume that these two teams will finish behind Spain and Portugal in Group B, but the equation is changed entirely if someone comes away with three points in this one.

Uruguay 1, Egypt 0

"Devastation for Egypt. The plan was so close to working perfectly – now, even winning its last two games might not be enough. Hard to second guess leaving Salah on the bench but ..."  – USA TODAY Sports' Martin Rogers

FULL TIME – Uruguay 1, Egypt 0. Gimenez's header in the 89th clinches a crucial three points for Uruguay. It's the first time since 1970 that the team has won its World Cup opener.

89' GOAL URUGUAY! A free kick from near the corner comes in and José Giménez powers in the header. A winner for Uruguay?

89' – Cavani hits the post! Free kick is off the woodwork.

83' – Huge save! El-Shenawy gets a hand on a rocket from Edinson Cavani.

82' – Egypt uses its final substitution and it's won't be Salah. Ramadan Sobhi on for Amr Warda. "Egypt's plan, ever since Salah's injury became clear after the Champions League final, was to save him for the huge second game against Russia." – USA TODAY Sports' Martin Rogers

73' – Suarez fails to convert again! The Uruguayan gets in and tries to dribble around the goalkeeper rather than take the shot, but another terrific save by El-Shenawy. Disappointing from one of the world's best scorers.

70' – Egypt is bunkering down and defending well. Time to bring on Salah or hold on for a draw?

63' – Another sub for Egypt, with forward Kahraba replacing forward Marwan Mohsen.

59' – Uruguay makes two substitutions:  Carlos Sánchez comes on for Nahitan Nández and Cristian Rodríguez for Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

50' – First sub of the game is Egypt, with Sam Morsy coming on for Tarek Hamed in the midfield

46' – Big save! Suarez gets in behind the defense, but Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy gets his knee on the point-blank shot to keep the game scoreless.

HALFTIME (0-0) – "Luis Suarez just put together one of the worst halves I’ve ever seen him play. Means nothing. Time and again, he has turned on the magic when needed and is most dangerous when he’s being doubted." – USA TODAY Sports' Martin Rogers

Uruguay had more of the ball, but really lacked the conviction in the final third. Credit to Egypt's defense for a strong 45 minutes.

24' – Suarez misses a huge chance! With an open net, Uruguay's star striker mishits the ball into the side netting – shocking. That could come back to haunt them.

15' – Egypt gets a free kick about 30 yards out and it's played into a dangerous area, but Uruguay manages to clear.

Pregame – Mo Salah is NOT in Egypt's starting lineup today. The Liverpool star injured his shoulder in the Champions League final last month and was thought to be nearing 100%, but evidently is not ready to start.

No surprises for Uruguay. Luis Suarez plays his first World Cup game since biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini four years ago.
