Tua Tagovailoa beats Kyler Murray for Walter Camp national player of the year - AL.com

The first of three national player-of-the-year honors was handed out before the main awards show Thursday evening.

And the Walter Camp Award went to … Tua Tagovailoa.

Alabama’s quarterback beat Kyler Murray of Oklahoma, Gardner Minshew of Washington State, Will Grier of West Virginia and Josh Allen of Kentucky.

The second of the overall player of the year honors will be announced with the Maxwell Award later Thursday night. Tagovailoa is the second from Alabama to win the Walter Camp after Derrick Henry claimed it in 2015.

The Heisman Trophy completes the circuit Saturday night in New York as the sport’s top prize.

After the Walter Camp was handed out on SportsCenter, Tagovailoa was asked about the status of his high-ankle sprain.

“I’m just trying to get better every day," he said. "Hopefully it feels a lot better leading up to the game.”
