Yesterday, the NFL and, specifically, the NFC North was rocked by the news that the Green Bay Packers had fired head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy had been the Packers’ coach since 2006, and it’s a bit of a surprise that they did it before the end of the regular season, but it’s done.
According to some of the smart people that pay pretty close attention to this kind of thing, the early favorite to replace McCarthy is a guy that fans of the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers are familiar with.
Our friends at BetDSI have posted the odds on who they think will be the Packers’ head coach when the 2019 season begins, and the name at the top of the list is none other than Vikings’ offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. DeFilippo is +200 in the early odds, meaning that a $100 bet on DeFilippo to be the Packers’ next head coach would pay $200 if it were to happen.
The rest of the top five are
- Josh McDaniels, New England Patriots offensive coordinator (+225)
- Adam Gase, Miami Dolphins’ head coach (+500)
- Jim Harbaugh, University of Michigan head coach (+800)
- Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma University head coach (+1000)
As you can see, DeFilippo and McDaniels are a reasonable distance ahead of most of the field. You’ll remember that McDaniels was set to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts this past offseason, but withdrew at the last moment.
We’ll get more into DeFilippo’s merits here in a little bit in a separate post, but as things stand right now, he appears to be the early leader to take over the Vikings’ biggest rival in the NFC North.
